Box Score POULTNEY, Vt. – Maine Maritime netted a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 shutout win over Green Mountain in a North Atlantic Conference women's soccer match Sunday. The Mariners improved to 3-5-2 overall, 2-1-1 NAC, while the Eagles fell to 4-5, 0-3.
Maine Maritime started the scoring in the 3rd minute of play on a nice team effort in the Eagles' final third. Sarah Brochu gathered in a ball on the left wing and rounded the corner of the Eagles' defense. She crossed the ball over just past the far post to Briana Obshatkin, who promptly redirected it back to Dani Holt in front of the net. The senior defender ripped a shot into the top right corner for a 1-0 Mariners lead.
That goal would hold up until halftime despite both teams' best effort to capitalize on other chances. Green Mountain's Katrina Ellis-Ferrara, in particular, had two opportunities to tie the score from close in, but both times drove the ball low and hard right at MMA's keeper Taylor O'Malley who made the saves.
The Mariners controlled the tempo of the game for the majority of the second half and were able to push another ball across GMC's end line in the 55th minute of play. Victoria Cooper took advantage of a shift in the play winning a ball about 30 yards away from the Green Mountain goal. She collected herself and then lined a shot over a leaping Eagles' keeper Amber Heath.
O'Malley made four saves to pick up the victory and shutout for the Mariners, while Heath turned aside three shots in the loss.
Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday, 3:30 p.m., hosting Johnson State in a North Atlantic Conference game.
