Samantha Ryan (
Los Angeles, Calif.) and
Gillian O'Neal (
Burbank, Calif.) helped guide the Mariners to a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine. In the latter match the Mariners fell 3-0 to the University of New England.
Maine Maritime 3 – University of Southern Maine 1 (8-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-20)
USM claimed the first set after scoring 10-straight points and jumping out to a 17-5 lead. The Mariners found their rhythm and came out strong in the second set, eyeing redemption for a three set defeat by the Huskie earlier this season, on August 30th.
Maine Maritime took the next three sets, and the victory.
Settling in at a new position, Ryan recorded a career-high and game-leading 25 digs. O'Neal was unstoppable all over the court, recording a career-high and game-leading 25 kills, for a .357% kill percentage, and 19 digs.
Molly Marcotte (
Seekonk, Mass.) delivered four service aces, nine digs and four kills, while
Sydney Robertson (
Barnstead, N.H.) picked up 12 kills, two service aces and three digs.
Jess Menges (
Old Forge, N.Y.) recorded 12 digs, five kills and a service ace.
University of New England 3 – Maine Maritime 0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-16)
The Nor'Easters scored 12-straight points to claim the first set. Maine Maritime came closer in the second set, falling 25-22, and falling in the third set 25-16.
The Mariners were led by O'Neal who picked up her second double-double of the day with 14 digs, 10 kills, and two service aces. Ryan added 14 digs.
UNE's Leah Janelle picked up 10 kills and seven digs, while teammate Courtney Lambrese also picked up 10 kills, and five digs. Brooke Gibbons added 17 digs.
Maine Maritime sits at 8-10 overall, and will host the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Tuesday for a pair of matches starting at 5:00 PM. Earlier this season the Mariners defeated the Bengals 3-1.
