Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (2-3, NEFC 1-2) at Nichols College (1-6, 0-4) 12:00 P.M.

 

Series History: The Mariners are 19-17 all-time against the Bison, in the rivalry that dates back to 1959. Maine Maritime defeated Nichols in the last two matchups, after dropping four games before that.

 

Last Meeting: Last season the Mariners defeated Nichols 63-52. Billy Wetherbee and Michael Fahey (Union, Conn.) combined for 426 yards, and six touchdowns, to lead Maine Maritime's offensive attack. John Doyon (Hampden, Maine) paced the Maine Maritime's with a game-high 11 tackles. Frank True added nine tackles and a sack and Michael Burgess (North Yarmouth, Maine) recorded six tackles and 1.5 sacks.

 

Nichols' quarterback Quillian Respass accounted for the majority of the Bison's yards and all of their scores. The sophomore was 19 of 27 for 331 yards through the air with four touchdowns and carried 27 times for 205 yards and four scores.

 

Coach Olmsted: Nichols welcomed Dale Olmsted this season as their Head Coach. Saturday's game will mark the first time Coach Olmsted faces the Mariners. 

 

Maine Maritime Last Week: The Mariners defeated Coast Guard in week seven, 13-7. Maine Maritime's defense picked up four interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in the second half to hold the Bears offense and claim the victory.

 

Cody McDonald (Lincoln, Maine), Thomas Kinton (York, Maine), Collin Joyce (Westbrook, Maine), and Andrew Cavanaugh (Wenham, Mass.) grabbed interceptions for the Mariners; while Michael Burgess stripped Bear quarterback Gordy Holloway on a sack to force a fumble, which Joshua Hall (Sidney, Maine) recovered for the Mariners.

 

Quarterback Michael Fahey led the Mariners offense with 99 rushing yards, and a touchdown, while Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) added 60 yards on 16 carries.

 

Nichols Last Week: The Bison dropped their week seven matchup against MIT, 52-20. Senior Felipe Njeim rushed for a pair of scores, while Nichols junior Bryan Hummel completed 10 passes for 180 yards a score – a 15-yarder to senior Brett Franciosi, who finished with five receptions for 91 yards.

 

Junior captain Connor Richard led all student-athletes with 11 tackles (three solo) while senior Jonathan Winbush notched 10 (two solo) to go along with one pass breakup and one QB hurry. Freshman Ryan Jacques elevated his team-leading sack total to 4.5 as he got to Williams once, and sophomore Matthew McEvilly recorded his first interception of the season.

 

The Mariners: Jacob Doolan continues to lead the Mariners with 129.4 yards per game, and four touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Fahey ranks second with 123.4 yards per game, and four rushing touchdowns. Joe DiBiase (Portland, Maine) has also scored four rushing touchdowns in just three games. Jacob Doolan leads the team with three receiving touchdowns, and 29.2 receiving yards per game.

 

Teagan Candage (Bar Harbor, Maine) averages 20 yards per return, for a total of 320 yards on 16 returns. Michael Burgess is averaging 37.3 yards per punt, including a long punt of 60 yards.

 

Thomas Kinton leads the Mariner defense with 41 total tackles to average, 8.2 tackles per game, and Michael Burgess leads the team with 6.5 sacks on the year.

 

The Bison: Quarterback Quillian Respass has completed 54 out of 117 passes, for a total of 675 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Respass also leads the team rushing with 281 yards on 89 carries, and two touchdowns.

 

Brett Franciosi leads the team with 24 kick returns, averaging 18.63 yards per return.

 

Connor Richard has 52 total tackles to lead the Bison defense, including 3.5 tackles for a loss, and an interception. Brett McEvoy ranks second with 46 total tackles, three tackles for a loss, and a sack.

 

Defensive Triumph: The Mariners defense held Coast Guard to just seven points in week seven. Seven points in the lowest score by an opponent since the Mariners defeated Fitchburg State on September 24, 2011, 40-7.

 

Interception Record: Maine Maritime picked off the Bears four times in week seven, breaking the single game record for most interceptions in a game.

 

Burgess Attack: Michael Burgess has recorded 6.5 sacks this season, to average an NEFC leading 1.30 sacks per game. Burgess has also picked up 11 tackles for a loss this season, leading the NEFC with an average of 2.20 tackles for a loss per game.

 

There's No Cooling Doolan: Jacob Doolan sits atop the NEFC with an average of 161.0 all-purpose yards per game.

 

NEFC Play of the Week: The Mariners Defense grabbed this week's New England Football Conference Play of the Week. Maine Maritime's defense forced Coast Guard Quarterback Gordy Holloway to fumble late in the fourth quarter. Joshua Hall recovered the fumble for the Mariners, stopping the Bears offense from marching down the field.

NCAA Leaders: Maine Maritime still leads the NCAA Division III as a rushing offense with an average of 402.1 yards per game.

 

Jacob Doolan ranks 14th in the nation with 129.4 rushing yards per game, quarterback Michael Fahey ranks just behind him in 16th with 123.4 yards per game.

 

Michael Burgess ranks ninth in the nation with 2.2 tackles for a loss per game, and 8th in sacks per game with 1.3.

 

The Mariners also hold the single game record this season with 85 rushing plays in one game vs. Mass. Maritime on September 20th, breaking the previous school record of 83 against Nichols in 1976.
