Spartans Overcome Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's soccer fell to Castleton on Saturday at Ritchie Field, 4-1.

The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead quickly in the first half when Kiley Baran played a ball up to Mallory Costello. Costello shot a ball that ricocheted off the fingertips of Mariner keeper Kelsie Hilton (Monmouth, Maine) hitting the crossbar and bouncing in for the score.

Castleton extended their lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute when Sarah Carlson picked up a free kick goal beating Hilton to the top right corner of the goal.

The Mariners answered right back a little under a minute later, when Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) headed in a goal to cut the Castleton lead to 2-1. The score was Obshatkin's first goal of the season.

The Spartans scored twice in the second half to secure the victory. Jess Phillips found the back of the net in the 85th minute and Dominique Valancius scored in the 88th minute for Castleton.

Hilton finished the game with six saves, while Jessica Binkowski stopped two shots in net for the Spartans. 

The Mariners (5-10, NAC 2-6) will host Green Mountain College tomorrow, Sunday, October 26th for their final game of the regular season. The Mariners will honor their five seniors prior to the game.
