Mariners Edge Beavers; Clinch No. 3 Playoff Seed

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime avenged an early season setback against Maine-Farmington with a 52-48 win over the Beavers in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Saturday. The victory earned Maine Maritime the No. 3 seed in next week's NAC playoffs and setup a rubber-match with UMF.

The Mariners (16-9 overall, 13-5 NAC) won a tiebreaker over No. 4 Husson (record against conference from top to bottom ) by beating New England College twice. Maine Maritime will host UMF (9-16, 8-10) Tuesday in a quarterfinal game. Game time to be determined.

Cheyenne Malloy came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points for the Mariners, while Kari Jones and Bekah Campbell each tallied nine points.

Leah Jackson hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go with five points and six assists.

Sophomore Elizabeth Ferry paced UMaine-Farmington offensively with 11 points, and was the only Beaver player in double digits. Holly Oliver added nine points and four assists in her final game on the Dearborn Gym court.

UMaine-Farmington committed 23 turnovers leading to 24 Maine Maritime points, helping the Mariners overcome their shooting woes of 27% from the field. And while the teams were an even 44 to 44 on the boards, the Mariners' 19 to 9 advantage on the offensive glass produced 13 second-chance points for MMA.

Malloy's 3-pointer with 2:54 showing on the clock broke a 46-46 tie, the fourth deadlock of the second half, and gave the Mariners a lead they held the rest of the way.

Ayla Allen pulled the Beavers to within one on her jumper with 1:19 remaining. Jackson's reply attempt for the Mariners was off-target, but each side proceeded to turn the ball over in short order without even getting away a shot.

A Farmington foul eventually put Malloy on the line for two shots, and she converted both to extend the Maine Maritime lead to three, 51-48, with :20 on the clock.

Lindsay Ranquist was fouled with five seconds left but missed both free throws for the Beavers.
