Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime defeated Becker College in game two of the Old Town Canoe Classic by a final score of 2-1, at Ritchie Field on Friday night.
Becker College struck quickly in the first half, finding the back of the net in the third minute, on the foot of Alycia Dery. On an insert by teammate Alison Mosdale, Dery was able to sneak the ball to the left of Mariner Keeper Kelsie Hilton.
It was not until the 20th minute that Maine Maritime evened the score at 1-1 on a ball played up by Victoria Cooper to Emily Wyman, who then placed the ball to the right of the Becker Keeper Katherine Cormier.
Cooper capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity after a Becker handball in the box, taking the lead for the Mariners 2-1, a lead that lasted into the halftime.
The two teams played an extremely hard fought second half. Each team saw quality scoring opportunities. Becker was unable to capitalize on two back-to-back corner kick chances half way through the half. Mariner Emily Wyman bounced a free kick shot off the crossbar, which Cormier then grabbed to stop the second chance opportunity.
Despite a few late game attempts by Becker, Maine Maritime was able to hang on for the win and improve to 1-0 on the season.
"I was very happy with the girls work ethic and their ability to come back from a goal down to get the result," said Head Coach Seth Brown.
Hilton earned the win in net for the Mariners, who will take on Berry College on Sunday, August 31st at 1:30 PM. Berry College defeated Thomas College 9-0 in game one of the Old Town Canoe Classic.
