Throggs Neck, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy defeated SUNY Maritime on Saturday 3-0, (25-14, 25-20, 28-26) to grab their first victory of the Fifth Annual Maritime Classic.

The Mariners led for the majority of the first set to win 25-14. In the second set the Mariners jumped out to a 9-5 score, but the Privateers came back with seven straight points to make it 9-12, the Mariners fought back to win 25-20. In the third set the Mariners fought from behind, to win 28-26.

Maine Maritime's Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) grabbed a match-high 18 kills, while adding 11 digs. Jess Menges (Old Forge, N.Y) had a team-high 15 digs, two kills and two aces, and Molly Marcotte (Seekonk, Mass.) had 12 digs, four service aces and two kills.

SUNY Maritime was led by Sydney Carella who had a match-high 18 digs, and two service aces. Shannon Brady had 14 kills, eight digs and three service aces. 

The Mariners (2-6), who have won back-to-back matches, will face Merchant Marine and Mass. Maritime tomorrow starting at 10:00 a.m. in the final day of the Fifth Annual Maritime Classic.
