Box Score CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy fell to New England Football Conference opponent Western New England University on Saturday afternoon, 80-16.
Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) amassed 116 rushing yards on 12 carries and a touchdown, while catching one pass for 34 yards resulting in a touchdown. Maine Maritime recorded 338 rushing yards on the afternoon.
The Mariners jumped on the board first with a three-play, 57-yard drive down the field. Doolan ran the ball 38 yards for the score, and Michael Fahey (Union, Conn.) successfully converted the two-point conversion making it 8-0 in favor of Maine Maritime.
The Golden Bears matched the touchdown with their eight-play, 70-yard drive score when Mohamed Camara ran the ball in from 17 yards. Western New England's two-point conversion failed, giving the Mariners the 8-6 lead.
Western New England went on to score two more times in the first quarter making it 18-8, but the Mariners defense was rewarded with a safety in the start of the second quarter making it 18-10. The Golden Bears responded with three touchdowns in the second quarter increasing their lead to 38-10.
The Mariners scored to finish the first half, on a four-play 46-yard drive capped off by a Doolan 34-yard touchdown reception from Fahey to cut the lead to 38-16.
Western New England combined for 42 points in the second half, led by quarterback Tyler Ward who went 15-21 with 321 yards, and four touchdowns.
Defensively John Doyon (Hampden, Maine) recorded 11 tackles for the Mariners, including 1.5 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. The Golden Bears were led by Dean Soucie who recorded 14 tackles.
Maine Maritime will host NEFC opponent Endicott College next Saturday, October 4th at noon.
