Hornets Sting Mariners

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball fell to North Atlantic Conference foe Lyndon State College, 75-60 on Friday night inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Hornets jumped out to an early 16-7 lead following a pair of three-pointers from both Avery King and David Johnson. Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) hit a three of his own to close the Lyndon lead to 16-10 with 14:31 remaining in the half. Holt connected on a jumper, and Jason Hatch (Islesboro, Maine) hit a pair of free throws to bring the Mariners within three with 6:37 left, but the Hornets scored nine unanswered points to close out the half, taking a 36-24 lead into the break.

Lyndon stretched their lead to 50-27 following a 14-4 run to open up the second half, but the Mariners kept fighting, outscoring the Hornets 9-3 to close the lead to 67-51 with a little under five minutes remaining. The deficit proved to be too strong for the Mariners, who fall to 1-15 on the season and 0-9 in the NAC. The Hornets improve to 4-11 and 3-6. 

Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with 14 points, three assists and a rebound, while Holt added 13 points, two rebounds and an assist. Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) added 12 points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist.

King finished the night leading all scorers with 27 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, while teammate David Johnson added 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Mariners return to the court tomorrow against Johnson State at 2:00 p.m. for another NAC contest.
