Box Score 2 BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to the University of Southern Maine 3-0 (25-22, 35-33, 25-17) and the University of New England 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Game One: Southern Maine 3 – Maine Maritime 0
The Huskies grabbed a 25-11 first set win, but the Mariners made things close in the second set falling 25-16 and in the third set falling 25-17.
Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with a game-high 19 kills, while adding six digs. Jessica Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high 13 digs, and Molly Marcotte (Woonsocket, R.I.) recorded 26 assists.
Jess Williamson led the Huskies with 14 kills and nine digs, while Demi Ruder led all players with 17 digs, and Nicole Schmitz and Megan Nilson each had 14 assists.
Game Two: UNE 3 – Maine Maritime 0
After escaping a second set that featured 21 ties and 10 lead-changes in 35-33 result, the University of New England women's volleyball team defeated Maine Maritime Academy by a 3-0 margin. The Nor'Easters took the first set 25-22 and the third set 25-17.
Gillian O'Neal led the Mariners with 16 kills, seven digs and a block. Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) grabbed a team-high 13 digs, while recording nine kills and a block. Jessica Menges had 11 digs, and three kills while Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) added a game-high 38 assists, seven digs and two service aces.
Courtney Lambrese led UNE with 14 kills, while Emily Rumery and Grayson Szczepaniak recorded 11 kills each. Brittany Morrison led the way with 17 digs and Brooke Gibbons had 29 assists.
The Mariners fall to 10-9 overall and will host Unity College on Wednesday, October 14 for a non-conference battle.
