Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball fell to non-conference opponent Colby College on Tuesday evening 3-0, inside of Smith Gymnasium.
Despite holding an early lead, the Mariners fell in the first set 25-17. In the second set, the Mariners used four-straight aces from Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) to tie things up at 8-8 but the Mules came away with the 25-20 victory.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle, the Mariners used a three-point run highlighted by an Alex McClure (Iron Station, N.C.) kill to take a 22-19 lead, forcing the Mules to call a timeout. Colby answered back following their timeout, scoring four-straight points to hold a slight 23-22 edge. Colby's Elizabeth Noyes served an ace to put the game at match point, 26-25, and the Mules took the 3-0 victory.
Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded a double-double with a match-high 21 assists, and 10 digs, while adding a pair of kills and a block. O'Neal led all players with 15 kills and seven digs while adding four aces, Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) added 14 digs, five kills and a block, and Jessica Menges (Old Forge, N.Y.) tallied 12 digs and two kills.
Emily Moslener tallied a team-high 12 assists and 10 digs to grab a double-double for Colby, while Erin Maidman led Colby with 12 digs, and Noyes led the Mules with a pair of aces.
Maine Maritime falls to 16-11 on the year, while Colby improves to 14-10 overall. The Mariners travel to Saint Joseph's this Saturday to take on the Monks and Simmons College in non-conference action starting at 1:00 pm.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their seniors, Coronado Hickman (Houston, Texas), Molly Marcotte (Woonsocket, R.I.), Jessica Menges, and Cindy Schultz (Bingham, Maine).
