Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) tallied a career-high 19 points on Saturday afternoon, as Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell in their season opener to Southern Maine, 82-50.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Newcomb responded with a three-pointer to close the gap to 4-3. Southern Maine shot 54.3 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point territory in the first half, to take a 49-19 lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half, the Mariners outscored the Huskies 13-4 to cut the deficit to 57-34, but Southern Maine held on for the victory.
Newcomb finished the game going an impressive, 5-for-10 from behind the arc, while adding four rebounds and a steal. Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) recorded nine points, four rebounds and a steal and Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) tallied eight points, three rebounds and two steals.
Fred Knight and Aaron Toman led the way for the Huskies with 10 points apiece, while Omar Haji-Hersi recorded a game-high six boards and Isaiah Patterson added a game-high six helpers.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, and will return to action next Saturday, November 21 at SUNY Maritime.
