Men's Basketball Falls to Earlham

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Earlham College, 80-66 on Sunday afternoon, in the consolation game of the Garnet Holiday Tournament hosted by Swarthmore College.

The Mariners remained within striking distance for most of the first half, but the Quakers outscored the Mariners 24-14 to close out the final nine minutes and took a 40-27 lead into the intermission.

Maine Maritime continued to fight, scoring nine-unanswered points with just under six minutes remaining in the game, to cut the deficit to eight points (57-49), but the Quakers hung on for the 80-66 victory.

Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists on his way to All-Tournament honors, while Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) ended the afternoon just shy of recording another double-double, with 13 points, a game-high nine rebounds and a steal. Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) added ten points, two rebounds and two assists.

Earlham's Elijah Wilson-Thomas led all players with 24 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, Taylen Alexander added 16 points and eight rebounds and Kamari Hunter chipped in with 12 points.

The Mariners fall to 3-7 on the season, while the Quakers improve to 1-7. Maine Maritime will return to action in 2016 when they host North Atlantic Conference rival Husson University on January 9 at 3:00 p.m. inside of Smith Gymnasium.
