Eagles Defeat Mariners

BANGOR, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Husson University on Saturday afternoon 72-60 in North Atlantic Conference action.

Mackenzie Vosburgh's (Rhineback, N.Y.) three closed the Eagles' lead to 14-7 with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter, sparking a 4-2 Maine Maritime run but Husson took a 18-11 lead into the second quarter.

The Mariners put together a 10-5 run in the second quarter to close Husson's lead to 25-21, forcing the hosts to call a timeout. The Eagles came out with eight-straight points, before the Mariners could find their offensive rhythm, and Husson took a 35-25 lead into the intermission.

Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) and Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners in the first two quarters with six points each, while Willey led all players in the first half with five boards.

In the first two quarters, Chandler Guerrette led the Eagles with 10 points, and three steals.

The Mariners opened up the third quarter with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine), to close the gap to 35-32, but the Eagles answered with seven-straight points to make it 42-32.

With a little over a minute remaining in the third quarter, Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) made a jump shot to bring the Mariners within seven, but the Eagles took a 53-43 lead into the final quarter.

A Felix jumper closed Husson's lead to seven with 2:36 remaining in the game, but the Mariners could not come back from the deficit.

Felix led the Mariners with 18 points, and a game-high seven rebounds, while Charters added 13 points.

Rebecca Young led the Eagles with 18 points and four rebounds, while Kenzie Worcester added 13 points and four rebounds and Victoria McIntyre and Darla Morales each contributed 11 points.

With the loss, the Mariners fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the NAC. The Mariners return to action on Tuesday, December 8th when they host Daniel Webster for a non-conference matchup at 5:30 pm.
