Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Sophomore Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) tallied a career-high 26 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball in a hard-fought 93-78 loss to Husson University on Saturday afternoon, in North Atlantic Conference play.
The Mariners led by as much as six points with 11:32 remaining in the first half, but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to build a 25-21 lead and entered the intermission with the 48-34 advantage.
Husson went on a 9-4 run to open up the second half and led 66-46 with 11:46 remaining, but the Mariners continued to fight. Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) hit a three, sparking a 9-0 run to close the gap to 66-55 with 10:30 left in the game. Despite outshooting the Eagles from the floor, beyond the arc and at the line in the second half, the Mariners dropped their first conference game of the season.
Thayer finished the afternoon with 26 points and three rebounds, Newcomb added an impressive 25 points and five rebounds, and Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) led the Mariners with seven rebounds, while adding 10 points and a block.
Raheem Anderson and Trevon Butler led the Eagles with 30 points each, Butler all players with nine boards, while Anderson chipped in with four rebounds.
The Mariners fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. Maine Maritime will return to action on Tuesday, December 8th when they host Bowdoin College for a non-conference battle at 7:30 pm.
