Hatch Leads Mariners in Near Upset on Senior Day

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Maine-Farmington 71-68, in overtime on Saturday afternoon to conclude their 2014-2015 season.

The Mariners recognized their senior, Jason Hatch (Islesboro, Maine) in a ceremony prior to the game.

Maine Maritime came out strong in the first half, leading 19-9 following a three-point play from Hatch with 9:51 remaining. Hatch put the Mariners up by 10 once again, following a pair of made free throws, with 2:33 remaining. Maine-Farmington cut the deficit to just seven points, as the hosts took a 30-23 lead into the half. 

Maine-Farmington scored five-straight points to open up the second half, cutting the Mariner lead to 30-28, but four-straight points from Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) gave the Mariners a 34-28 advantage with 17:33 remaining in regulation. The Beavers responded with back-to-back three-point possessions to tie it at 34-34. 

Zachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) and Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) sunk 3-pointers on the next two possessions to put the Mariners up by six with 14:14 remaining. Maine-Farmington went on a nine-point run sparked by six points from Nick Hilton to take a 42-40 lead with 11:31 remaining. The two teams battled back and forth sending the game into overtime, notched at 59-59.

Hatch opened up the extra period with a layup, but the Beavers went on a five-point run to take a 64-51 lead. With 28 seconds left, Holt splashed a 3-pointer to bring it within two, but Pet Sumner was sharp from the line to put the Beavers ahead 70-66 just five seconds later. Thayer grabbed a layup to bring it within two with 16 seconds remaining. UMF's Hilton went 1-2 from the line, giving the Mariners the final possession with 11 seconds remaining down by just three, but the upset efforts fell short.

Hatch led the Mariners with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Thayer ended the afternoon with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal, and Holt added 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) rounded out the Mariners in double-figures with 11 points, on 5-5 shooting from the field, four rebounds, and four assists.

Sumner led the way for the Beavers with 19 points, and an assist, while Nick Hilton added 18 points, five rebounds and an assist, and Eric Berry picked up 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals off the bench. Uriah Forest-Bulley chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.

The Mariners end their season at 3-23 overall and 2-16 in North Atlantic Conference play, while the Beavers improve to 9-16 overall and 8-10 in the NAC.
