Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball picked up a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 19-25, 25-8) victory over SUNY Maritime on Saturday morning, in day one of the 6th Annual Maritime Classic hosted by Merchant Marine Academy.
The Mariners opened up the first set with five-straight points highlighted by two kills from Tess Clark (Spring, Texas). Maine Maritime grabbed three-straight points to take the 25-17 victory and the 1-0 lead. In the second set, the Mariners grabbed a 25-16 victory. The Privateers tied things up at 16-16 and went on to outscore the Mariners 9-3 to close out the third set with a 25-19 victory. Maine Maritime answered right back in the fourth set with a commanding 25-8 win, to claim the 3-1 victory.
Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led all players with 21 kills, adding nine digs and a block, while Clark added a double-double with 11 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and three service aces. Alex McClure (Iron Station, N.C.) recorded 11 digs, four kills, a service ace and a block, while Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) added 37 assists, four service aces, six digs and a kill.
The Privateers were led by Shannon Brady, who grabbed 10 digs, eight kills, two blocks and a service ace and Carly Lombardo who had a team-high 15 digs, six kills and four service aces.
The Mariners improve to 7-3 overall and will return to action tomorrow in day two of the Maritime Classic against Massachusetts Maritime at 10:00 a.m. and Merchant Marine at noon.
