GAME NOTES: Maine Maritime at SUNY Maritime

Saturday's Game: Maine Maritime Academy (0-0) at SUNY Maritime (0-0), 12:00 p.m.

Series History: Saturday's game marks the first meeting between SUNY Maritime and Maine Maritime. 

Season Openers: Since the Mariners started playing football in 1946, Maine Maritime is 38-30-1 in the season's first game. Since 2000, the Mariners have gone 8-7 in the season opener. Under Head Coach Chris McKenney, the Mariners are 7-6 in season openers. In the past six seasons, the Mariners are 4-2 in season opener games.

SUNY Maritime: Located in Throggs Neck, New York, SUNY Maritime is a four-year college located at historic Fort Schuyler which offers a solid academic program coupled with a structured cadet life in the regiment for both men and women. Maritime College prepares students for careers through a content-centered curriculum and a hands-on, team building approach to learning. Maritime offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, 18 varsity athletic teams, summer training cruises to Europe, five ROTC options, and US Coast Guard license and intern programs. 

The Story of the 2014 Privateers: The Privateers went 4-6 in 2014, including a 3-4 record in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC). The Privateers won their final game of the season against Gallaudet, 26-0. Following the season the Privateers were heavily awarded in post season conference awards with 10 players receiving All-Conference nods.

Returning placekicker Diogo Dietrich was picked as the 2014 ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year, and was also named to the First Team Offense, while linebacker Kameron Knight was also named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention list. Dietrick was also named to the D3Football 2014 All-America Third Team. 

Rushing Title: Maine Maritime Academy Football captured the 2014 NCAA Division III Statistical Championship for Rushing Yards Per Game, for the second-straight year, averaging 393.9 yards per game. In 2013, Maine Maritime Academy averaged 372.6 rushing yards per game to claim the title.

Captains: Marine Engineering Technology major Jeddy Doyon (Hampden, Maine), Marine Engineering Operations major Michael Fahey (Union, Conn.), Marine Engineering Technology major Justin Lovely (West Gardiner, Maine), and Marine Engineering Operations major Jonathan Ware (Andover, Conn.) will lead the Mariners as team captains this season.

All-Conference Returners: New England Football Conference Defensive First Team selections Michael Burgess (Yarmouth, Maine) and Doyon return. 

Burgess, was a regular on the NEFC Honor roll, leading the Mariners last season with 7.5 sacks, 17 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles and two blocks. Burgess tallied 57 total tackles, including 34 solo. Burgess led the NEFC with 17 tackles for a loss, averaging 1.89 tackles for a loss per game, and ranked second in the conference with his 7.5 sacks.

Doyon, was named the NEFC 2014 Defensive Player of the week on October 26th, and led the Mariners' defense with 74 tackles last season. Doyon added 4.5 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, and two broken up passes. Doyon ranked fifth in the conference among linebackers with 8.2 tackles per game in 2014. 

NEFC Offensive Rookie of the Year and Offensive Second Team selection Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) enters his sophomore year. Doolan led the Mariners in rushing yards last season with 1,180 total yards on 127 carries for eight touchdowns, averaging 9.3 yards per carry and 131.1 rushing yards per game. Doolan also led the team in receptions with six receptions totaling 209 yards, with four touchdowns. Doolan broke 100 yards rushing in seven games in 2014, and surpassed 200 rushing yards in two of those contests.

Tailgating at SUNY: If you are planning on attending Maine Maritime Academy Football's season opener at SUNY Maritime on September 5th, please note that SUNY Maritime College only permits tailgating in certain areas. In order to gain access to the tailgate lot, a Tailgate Pass must be secured. Tailgate passes are currently available for sale at a cost of $50 per vehicle per game (plus online service charge). We do suggest any fans looking to tailgate purchase a pass in advance as they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tailgate lots are open 3 hours prior to game time and close 2 hours after the game.
