Box Score CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball outscored Maine-Fort Kent 12-1 in the final three minutes of the game to claim the 72-60 non-conference victory on Tuesday night, inside of Smith Gym.
The Mariners built a 14-0 lead with 4:30 remaining the first quarter, but the Bengals began to chip away at the deficit and took a 20-19 lead at 5:51 in the second quarter. The two teams exchanged the lead seven times in the second quarter, before Maine-Fort Kent took a narrow 32-31 lead into the intermission.
The Bengals took a 49-48 into the fourth quarter but Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) scored back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Mariners a 61-59 lead with 3:17 remaining in the game. The Mariners outscored the Bengals 12-1 to close out the game, securing the victory.
Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) and Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 16 points each. Willey added a team-high eight rebounds, two steals and a block, while Felix pulled down six rebounds, dished out three assists and tallied two steals. Winchester ended the evening with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) contributed 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Ericka Saucier led the Bengals with a double-double of 15 rebounds and 14 points, while also adding an assist. Samantha Carapellucci added a double-double of her own with 13 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and a steal, Romanalyn Inocencio added 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals and a block and Danielle Carrillo contributed 10 points, two steals, a rebound and an assist.
Maine Maritime improves to 9-7 on the season, while the Bengals fall to 16-4 overall. The Mariners return to action on Friday when they travel to New Hampshire to take on Colby-Sawyer College for a 5:30 p.m. North Atlantic Conference game.
