Chargers Edge Mariners

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Colby-Sawyer College, 67-62 in North Atlantic Conference play on Friday night.

The two teams battled back-and-forth to open the game, before the Chargers took a five-point lead with 12:04 remaining. Trailing 14-9, the Mariners put together a 6-0 run, capped off by a Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) jumper to take a 15-14 lead. Colby-Sawyer took a 23-19 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Chargers built a 10-point lead with 17:31 remaining, but the Mariners answered with a 9-2 run to make it 37-34, highlighted by three points from both Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) and D.J. Harris (Vallejo, Calif.).

Colby-Sawyer took their biggest lead of the game, 48-36, with 9:09 remaining, following a Peter Donato three-point play. The Mariners fought back once again thanks to 57.7 shooting from the floor and 53.3 percent from beyond the arc in the second half. A three from Radcliffe with 3:07 to play, pulled the Mariners within three at 58-55, but the Chargers made 9-of-10 from the line in the final two minutes to seal the victory, 67-62.

Thayer led all players with 23 points, on 9-of-17 shooting, five rebounds, two assists and a steal, Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) added nine points and three rebounds, while both Radcliffe and Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) chipped in with eight points. Gilson led the Mariners with eight rebounds, and a game-high four blocks while also chipping in four points and two assists.

Donato led the Chargers with 21 points and eight rebounds, Milani Hicks finished with 15 points and seven rebounds and Taylor Grande added 12 points.

The Mariners fall to 3-14 overall and 2-8 in the NAC, while the Chargers improve to 12-5 on the season and 8-3 in the conference. Maine Maritime travels to take on New England College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
