Box Score LEWISTON, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Bates College on Tuesday night, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) in non-conference action.
Bates pulled away from a 14-11 lead to make it 22-14 in the first set and hung on for the 25-17 win.
Back-to-back aces by Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) helped put the Mariners up 17-15 in the second set and prompted a Bates timeout. The Bobcats used consecutive kills by Chandler McGrath to take 19-18, and after a Mariner service error and a Lisa Slivken kill, the Bobcats had the lead for good at 21-19. A kill by Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) closed the Mariners' deficit to 24-23 but Taylor Stafford-Smith's kill from Jacqueline Forney gave the Bobcats the 25-23 second set win.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but the Mariners came back to tie it at 9-9 sparked by back-to-back kills by Clark and Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif,). Bates used an ace by Forney and a kill by Slivken to build a 17-13 lead and the Mariners could only get within three for the rest of the set, falling 25-18.
O'Neal led the Mariners with 13 kills, and eight digs. Clark added nine kills and seven digs and Adams tallied a double-double of 25 assists and 11 digs, while also notching two aces. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Mariners with 13 digs.
McGrath led the Bobcats with 13 kills, while teammate Gabi Eustache led the team with 19 digs. Forney tallied a match-high 32 assists and Claire Naughton led the team with three aces.
The Mariners fall to 16-7 on the season and will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer to take on UMaine-Presque Isle and Husson University, beginning at 12:00 pm for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Bobcats improve to 7-12 overall.
