Mariners Sweep Conference Opponents; Secure #1 Seed in NAC Tournament

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Maine Maritime Academy wrapped up North Atlantic Conference regular season play sweeping UMaine-Presque Isle and Husson University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Colby-Sawyer College.

Maine Maritime Academy 3 – UMaine-Presque Isle 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-21)

Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) tallied a double-double of 14 kills and 14 digs, while adding two aces and one assist to lead the Mariners. Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) notched 11 kills, seven assists, and a block and Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Mariners with 35 assists and a career-high eight aces.

Abby Jewett led the Owls with five kills and three digs, and teammate Hannah Williams led the team with eight digs.

Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Husson University 0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-19)

O'Neal recorded 12 kills, seven digs, three assists and an ace to lead the Mariners, while Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) added a season and career-high 11 kills. Clark finished just shy of a double-double with 11 digs, nine kills, four blocks and an ace and Adams recorded 37 assists, three digs, two aces and a block.

Kaitlyn Woods led the Eagles with four kills, Riley Mooers tallied a team-high six digs and Hanna Hembrow led Husson with 10 assists.

The Mariners improve to 18-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the NAC, while the Owls fall to 2-5 overall and the Eagles fall to 5-2. The Mariners conclude conference play and will host Colby College on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm, for Senior Night and Volleykids Recognition night.

With the win, the Mariners earned the No. 1 seed for the 2016 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Volleyball Championship Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites Saturday, October 29.

The Mariners (18-7 overall) claimed the top seed in the conference tournament after posting a perfect 7-0 record in NAC play and will earn a bye in Saturday's quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Colby-Sawyer (10-19 overall, 6-1 NAC) will also earn a bye in the quarterfinals.

Husson (14-13, 5-2) claimed the No. 3 seed, while Lyndon (10-9, 4-3), Castleton (9-11, 3-4), and UMaine-Presque Isle (5-26, 2-5) earned the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds respectively to complete the six-team tournament field.

Two quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, as No. 3 Husson will host No. 6 UMaine-Presque Isle and No. 4 Lyndon will host No. 5 Castleton. Quarterfinal match times will be announced early next week.

Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round which will be played on Friday, November 4, at Maine Maritime. The top-seeded Mariners will play the winner of the Lyndon/Castleton quarterfinal contest, while No. 2 Colby-Sawyer will take on the winner of the Husson/UMPI quarterfinal. Both match times will be announced.

Semifinal winners will square off for the conference championship on Saturday, November 5, at Maine Maritime. 

The NAC Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship.
