Mariners Fall to Salve Regina on Senior Day

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy amassed 407 yards of total offense in a 45-12 loss to Salve Regina University on Saturday in New England Football Conference (NEFC) action.

Junior quarterback Corey Creeger (Biddeford, Maine) led the Mariners offensively with 204 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 78 passing yards. Defensively, John Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) paced the Mariners with a career-high 13 tackles, including eight solo and one for a loss and Cody O'Brien (Wells, Maine) added 10 tackles, five solo and one for a loss.

Joel Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) returned the opening kickoff 21 yards to set up a 6-play, 64-yard scoring drive for the Mariners. The drive was highlighted by a 21-yard rush by Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) and capped off by a 5-yard rush from Creeger to put Maine Maritime up 6-0.

The Seahawks responded when James Dawson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, Andrew Verre added an extra point to give Salve Regina a 7-6 lead. Salve Regina scored on their next three drives, to take a 28-6 and added a touchdown on their opening drive of the second quarter to take a 35-6 lead with 12:43 to go.

On the next Salve Regina drive, the Mariner defense came up big, when Cody Chapman (Bangor, Maine) forced quarterback Danny McDermott to fumble, and teammate Robert Bradley, Jr. (Slidell, La.) recovered the ball on the Maine Maritime 25 yard line.

Salved scored on their first possession of the second half on a two-yard rush by Chris Rosati, and Verre added a 21-yard field goal with under two minutes to go in the third quarter to give the Seahawks a 45-6 lead.

Creeger ran the ball eight yards to start a 4-play, 47-yard scoring drive and rushed another nine yards, before completing a 21-yard pass to Jacob Doolan, to set up his second touchdown of the game, this time from nine yards, to make it 45-12 late in the game.

Jacob Doolan ended the afternoon with 49 rushing yards on five carries, and one reception for 21 yards, while James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) added 42 rushing yards and Jordan Susi (South Portland, Maine) contributed a team-high 45 receiving yards on three catches.

Salve Regina's Sam Pascale led the team with 127 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns, while teammate James Dawson carried the ball 11 times for 124 yards and a score. McDermott finished the afternoon with 96 passing yards on seven completions and Connor Sullivan led the receivers with 57 yards on three catches.

Damian Dell'Anno led the Seahawks with 11 tackles, including eight solo stops, Joey Farrar tallied an interception for the visitors and teammate Haiden Pereira tallied seven tackles, including six solo and two for a loss.

The Mariners conclude their season at 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference, while the Seahawks improve to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the NEFC.
