Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday evening, 64-48 in non-conference action at the Harold Alfond Center.
The Monks jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter, following an 8-0 run to close out the first 10 minutes of play. The Mariners continued to battle, cutting the deficit to seven points with 3:40 to play in the third quarter, after a jump shot from Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.) and a layup from Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine), but the Monks held the Mariners to seven points in the fourth quarter to hang on for the season-opening victory.
Sophomore Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 12 points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist, while senior Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) added eight points, four rebounds and two assists and freshman Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) tallied seven points, a team-leading five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Freshman Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with seven rebounds, including five defensive boards, and added three points, two assists and a block.
Kelsi McNamara led the Monks with a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a block, Hannah Marks added 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals off the bench and both Abbie Eastman and Regan McFerran chipped in with nine points.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 and will host UMaine-Presque Isle on Friday, for the opening game of the Pepsi Mariner Classic at 5:00 p.m., while the Monks improve to 1-0 and will travel to Husson on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
