The Mariners jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead following a three from Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and jumpers from Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) and Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine), but the Privateers tied things up and went on to take a brief four-point lead after five-straight points by Michael Walker.
The two teams battled back and forth and entered the intermission deadlocked at 31-31.
Maine Maritime took the lead with 17:42 left in the half and never fell behind for the remainder of the game.
The Privateers closed the gap to one with 2:39 remaining, but Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) sank a jumper to extend the lead to three, and with 16 seconds left splashed a three-pointer to give the Mariners a six-point lead.
Newcomb pulled down a huge defensive rebound following a failed three-point attempt from Walker, and converted on a free throw to secure the victory for the Mariners in the final seconds.
Newcomb followed up a 19-point performance in the Mariners' season opener with a new career-high 23 points and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead Maine Maritime. Thayer added an impressive 14 points, a game-high six steals, three assists and a rebound and Stevens finished the afternoon with 11 points, a team-high six boards, four assists and a block.
Patrick MacDonald led the Privateers with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two steals and two blocks. John Liccese tallied nine points, six assists, three rebounds and a steal, while Pat Conway added eight points.
November 20, 2005: Curry College 61 – Maine Maritime 53
The Mariners held a 33-29 advantage at the half, but the Colonels outscored the Mariners 32-20 in the second half to claim the victory.
Derek DiFrederico led the Mariners with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Marc McCorrison added 12 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal and Adam Haskell tallied 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal.
Michael Mohrin led the Colonels with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block, and both Marcus Jones and James Bartelle tallied 14 points. Bartelle added seven rebounds and two steals, while Jones pulled down three rebounds, dished out three assists and tallied three steals.
Maine Maritime Academy's Last Game: Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, December 10, 88-57, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
The Mariners fought back from an early 5-0 deficit, to take a 7-5 lead following two three-pointers from Brendan Newcomb at 16:23. A Tyler Thayer three at 14:13 gave the Mariners a 14-9 lead, but the Chargers scored seven-unanswered points to retake the lead (16-14) at 12:16. Back-to-back jump shots from Newcomb and Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) closed the gap to 24-23 with 6:43 to go. Colby-Sawyer outscored the Mariners 21-3 in the final 6:31 of the first half, to take a 45-26 advantage into the intermission.
Colby-Sawyer outscored the Mariners 43-31 in the second half to claim the victory.
Thayer led the Mariners with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and a steal, Newcomb added 14 points, two rebounds, and two assists, and Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks. Meklin's six blocks rank him third all-time in a single game in Maine Maritime men's basketball history.
Patrick Coffey led the Chargers with 19 points, nine rebounds, two steals, one assist, and a block, Jourdain Bell and Nate Cook each added 16 points, Dana Bean chipped in with 15 points, and Milani Hicks contributed 12 points for Colby-Sawyer.
SUNY Maritime College's Last Game: SUNY Maritime fell to Yeshiva 93-85 on Thursday, December 8.
Patrick MacDonald led the Privateers with a game-high 20 points, while recording four rebounds. Tim Hoch continued his hot pace with 18 points on the night as he led the team with three three-point baskets.
Junior John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had a team-best seven assists and added 14 points on the night. Isaiah Hayes chipped in with a dozen points, while both he and Tim McQuail led the team with five rebounds apiece.
Brendon Halligan had nine points, including two three-pointers while Brendan McGovern had nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. McQuail added three points, while Malik Clark had three rebounds and two assists with Bobby Parlow rounding out the box score with three rebounds.
The Privateers fell behind early as Yeshiva connected on the first three field goals of the night to take a 7-0 lead. Liccese connected on a layup, but Yeshiva added to its lead and took a 12-2 advantage.
Maritime turned things around as a MacDonald layup sparked the Privateers into an 11-0 run as Hoch added four points, Hayes converted a layup and McGovern knocked down a three to give the Privateers their first lead of the game at 13-12 with 14:10 to go in the opening half.
The offensive output continued for the Privateers, as Maritime got back-to-back three-pointers from Halligan and McQuail. Yeshiva knocked down a long-range shot, but McGovern connected on his second three-pointer of the night to give the Privateers a 30-25 lead.
Yeshiva bounced back to take a 36-32 lead with an 11-2 run, but another lengthy run by the Privateers followed as McDonald got things going again with a free throw. Liccese eased in for a layup, followed by two-straight three-pointers from Hoch, and then a third consecutive three-pointer from Halligan to put the Privateers ahead by 10 with 1:39 left in the half.
The double-figure lead lasted into the halftime break and Maritime emerged with the first shot of the second half as Hayes gave the Privateers their largest lead of the night at a 48-36 margin. Yeshiva then went on a 16-4 run to even the contest at 52 with 14:09 to go in regulation.
After exchanging the lead on several occasions, Maritime and Yeshiva were tied at 58, and then again at 60. Just as it appeared the Privateers were going to pull away again following back-to-back three pointers by Liccese and McGovern, the Maccabees had an answer again with a pair of three-pointers of their own to knot the game at 66.
The game see-sawed several times over the next several possessions as the game moved into the closing minutes. With the score tied at 80, Yeshiva was first to break the deadlock and move ahead by a bucket. Liccese connected on one from the stripe to trim the deficit to one, but Yeshiva closed out the contest on an 11-4 run to escape with the win by a 93-85 margin.
Curry College's Last Game: Curry fell to Emerson College 85-69 on Sunday, December 11.
Jason O'Neil went 7-for-13 and put up a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds with two steals and a block. Luke Schreiner came off the bench and chipped in 13 points, two steals and went 4-for-4 at the line. Jared Thorpe-Johnson and James Pina put up 11 points each, while Jaelen George-Bellitti recorded a team high seven assists.
The Mariners: After eight games Maine Maritime averages 66 points per game, while allowing opponents to score 79.6 points per game. The Mariners average 41.6 percent from the floor, 41.4 percent from 3-point land and 70.1 percent from the line. Maine Maritime averages 30.5 rebounds and 14.6 assists per game.
Brendan Newcomb and Tyler Thayer lead the Mariners with 14.6 points per game, Dylan Stevens averages 10.7 points per game and Nick Judge averages 10.3 points per game.
