Maine Maritime's Fourth Quarter Surge Falls Short Against Ursinus

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Ursinus College on Wednesday night, 54-51, in non-conference action at the Land of Magic Classic.

The Bears held the Mariners to single-digit scoring in the first two quarters of play to take a 28-14 lead into the intermission. Down 39-25 entering the fourth quarter, the Mariners outscored Ursinus 19-9 in the final seven minutes of the game, including tying things up at 48-48 with 1:54 to play following two layups by Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.).

Ursinus's Rachel Guy went 1-for-2 from the line to give the Bears a narrow 49-48 lead with 1:40 remaining and the Bears capitalized on a Mariner turnover to take a 51-48 lead with 55 seconds to go. Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) responded with a jump shot for the Mariners to close the gap to one, but Kaci McNeave sank a three-pointer with 22 seconds to play to give Ursinus a four-point advantage and the eventual win.

Felix tallied a game-high 17 points, while also pulling down two rebounds. Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) added eight points, three rebounds, two steals, and a block off the bench, and both Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) and Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) chipped in with six points. Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) led the team with four rebounds, while Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with three assists.

Lydia Konstanzer led Ursinus with 14 points, six rebounds, a steal and a block, while Guy ended the evening with 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal, and Libby Lannon tallied nine points, a game-high nine steals, six rebounds, and two assists. Toni Suler recorded a game-high seven rebounds and three blocks for the Bears.

The Mariners fall to 4-5 overall, while Ursinus improves to 5-5. Maine Maritime wraps up competition at the Land of Magic Classic tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., against Brooklyn College.
