Men's Basketball Wraps up 2016 with Big Win Over Curry

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball defeated Curry College on Saturday afternoon, 81-39 in the final game of the Mariner Holiday Classic, inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Mariners' 42-point margin of victory is the team's largest since December 2, 2008 when the Mariners defeated Unity College, 109-26.

Curry jumped out to a 6-2 lead following back-to-back threes from Jared Johnson and Luke Schreiner. The teams exchanged threes before the Mariners went on a 12-2 run, capped off by two three-pointers by Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine), to take a 17-11 lead with 10:41 remaining. Maine Maritime outscored the Colonels 17-11 in the remainder of the first half to take a 34-22 lead into the intermission.

A jump shot from Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine), followed by six-consecutive points from Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) sparked a 14-4 run by the Mariners. Maine Maritime held Curry to just six points during the final 10:25 of play, leading by as much as 45 points, to cruise to the 81-39 victory.

Maine Maritime shot 54.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Colonels 30-21. The Mariners also shot 54.5 percent from three-point land.

Judge led the Mariners with 21 points, on 6-of-7 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land, while also tallying two rebounds, two steals, and a block. Thayer ended the afternoon with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and dished out a team-high seven assists while also tallying five rebounds.

Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) scored 15 points on all three-point baskets, five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block and Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) rounded out the Mariners in double-digits with 11 points, a team-high five steals, two rebounds, and an assist. Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Johnson led the Colonels with nine points, two rebounds, and an assist and James Pina added eight points, five rebounds, two steals, an assist, and a block.

The Mariners improve to 3-7 overall while the Colonels fall to 1-9. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, January 4, when they host the University of Southern Maine at 4:00 pm.
