Mariners Secure Third Seed in NAC Tournament with Commanding Win Over Terriers

WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime sailed to a dominating 77-40 victory over Thomas College on Saturday afternoon to clinch the third seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference tournament.

Bekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) recorded the first six points to give the Mariners a 6-3 lead at 6:52. Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) added two points each to give the Mariners a 10-3 lead and Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) pulled down a defensive rebound and grabbed a layup to give the Mariners their biggest lead of the quarter (18-6) at 2:57.

The Terriers answered with five-straight to cut the deficit to 18-11 but Campbell added layups on back-to-back offensive possessions to give the Mariners a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Following a jumper from Willey to open up the second quarter and a three from Thomas' Katie McAllister to make it 24-17, the Mariners held the Terriers scoreless for nearly seven minutes to build a 40-18 lead. Alecia Faulkingham (Wiscasset, Maine) closed out the second quarter with a three to give the Mariners a 45-21 lead at the intermission.

The Mariners shot 51.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, and dominated the boards with 26 rebounds compared to the Terriers' 11. McLean led the Mariners in the first two quarters with 11 points, including going 3-of-4 from three-point land, while Campbell and Felix contributed 10 points apiece. McAllister led the Terriers with nine points, on all threes.

Maine Maritime held the Terriers to just six points in the third quarter, while building a 39-point lead (66-27) to enter the fourth quarter and hung on to cruise to the 77-40 North Atlantic Conference victory.

Felix led the Mariners with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, while McLean ended the afternoon with 15 points, six rebounds and an assist and Campbell tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and an assist.

McAllister tallied a game-high 17 points to lead Thomas, while adding three rebounds, and Jordan Agger-Barnes led the Terriers with seven rebounds.

The Mariners dominated the boards pulling down 53 rebounds compared to Thomas' 30, and shot 47 percent from the floor compared to the Terriers' 20.4 percent.

The Mariners conclude the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 13-5 conference record, clinching the third seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament. The Terriers end their season with a 3-22 season record, going 2-16 in the NAC.

Maine Maritime will host a quarterfinal matchup against Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday, February 23.
