Mariners Edge Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball held on to defeat Maine-Farmington 60-55, on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference play.

The two teams went over three minutes without scoring, until Maine Maritime's Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) opened up the scoring with a three-pointer. The teams continued to battle closely, entering the second quarter notched at 10-10.

The Mariners held their biggest lead of the game with 5:21 remaining in the second quarter, following a 10-2 run, sparked by a pair of threes from Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine). The Beavers came back to score six-straight to close out the half and cut Maine Maritime's lead to 22-20.

The Beavers outscored the Mariners 23-16 in the third quarter to take a 43-38 lead into the final quarter. Maine Maritime put together an 11-3 run, capped off by two threes from Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) to take a 48-46 lead at 4:34 but Farmington's Rhi Jackson hit a three to tie things up at 55-55 with 1:48 to go.

McLean found Felix under the net for a layup with just over a minute remaining, and a miss on the Beavers' end, followed by a timely defensive rebound from Felix gave the Mariners the ball. Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine) hit one from the line to give the Mariners a 58-55 edge with 15 seconds to go, and a missed three-pointer and a foul by the Beavers set up two made free throws for Willey to secure the victory.

Six-time North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week, Felix, led all scorers with 21 points for the Mariners. Felix was dominant on the low block on 7-of-14 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line. The freshman also had seven rebounds and two assists. Willey tallied 15 points, six rebounds, one steal and a block for the Mariners, and McLean contributed 13 points, three assists and a rebound. 

Meghan Smith recorded a double-double for Maine-Farmington with 16 points and 19 rebounds, Kelly Pomerleau added 11 points, three steals and two assists while Jackson ended the evening with eight points off the bench for the Beavers.

The Mariners improve to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference, while the Beavers fall to 11-10 on the season and 9-5 in the NAC. The Mariners will return to action this Friday at Castleton University for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
