Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball swept a pair of matches on Sunday afternoon against SUNY Maritime and Merchant Marine Academy to win the Seventh Annual Maritime Classic. This is the Mariners first Maritime Classic victory since 2013.
In the first match of the day, the Mariners fell in the first set, but came back strong in the next three sets to take a commanding 3-1 victory over the Privateers. In the Championship match between the United States Merchant Marine and Maine Maritime Academy, MMA cruised to a 3-0 win.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – SUNY Maritime 1 (22-25, 25-8, 25-17, 25-15)
Senior Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with a match-high 19 kills and added nine digs, two aces, an assist and a block. Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) followed up her double-double performance last night with 13 kills, nine digs, six blocks and four aces. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a match-high 22 assists, 10 digs, eight kills, three blocks and two aces. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 16 digs and also chipped in with five assists and three aces.
Carly Lombardo led the Privateers with seven kills, 10 digs, while Erika Bailey tallied a team-high 15 assists, while also chipping in with six digs nd Gabrielle Kempski led SUNY with 15 digs.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Merchant Marine Academy 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17)
Gillian O'Neal tallied a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs en route to Maritime Classic MVP honors, while Tess Clark added 11 kills, five digs and two blocks on her way to Maritime Classic All-Tournament Team. Maine Maritime's other All-Tournament selection, Maria Perez was impressive once again, recording a match-high 16 digs, two assists and two aces.
Sydney Adams tallied 19 assists, nine digs, six kills and three blocks and Melissa Spaulding added 16 assists, and three digs.
Dominique Pope led Merchant Marine with seven kills, teammate Gabby Marionakis led the team with 11 digs and Kyleigh Kappas tallied a team-high 17 assists.
Maine Maritime improves to 7-3 overall and will return to action next Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Colby College to take on both the Mules and Bates College.
