Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Senior captain Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) became Maine Maritime Academy's all-time leader in kills, as Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the first time since 2011.
The Mariners picked up the 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-23) victory over the Monks, improving to 1-0 on the season.
O'Neal led the Mariners with a match-high eight kills, moving her to 1,010 career kills, which broke the previous record of 1,007 kills held by Katie Clapham. O'Neal also led the Mariners with 16 digs.
Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) tallied six kills, five digs, three blocks and an assist, while María Belén Pérez Gutiérrez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded 15 digs, three aces, two kills and two assists. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) had 14 digs, nine assists, three kills and an ace, Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the team with 16 assists, while chipping in with 10 digs and Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with four blocks.
Victoria Huntley led the Monks with six kills and 12 digs, while teammate Jenelle Thompson notched a match-high 20 digs, and Shadai Gosselin added 11 digs, three kills and an ace. Sarah Dyer led the Monks with 10 assists.
The Mariners travel to Wheaton College next Friday, September 9 to take on Salem State at 6:00 p.m., in day one of the Wheaton Invitational.
