Mariners Fall in NEFC Opener to Engineers, 30-13

CASTINE, Maine -- Jacob Doolan (Fairfield, Maine) amassed 107 rushing yards to lead the Maine Maritime Academy football offense and Cody Chapman (Bangor, Maine) led the defense with a career-high 17 tackles, including five for a loss totaling 13 yards and a forced fumble, on Saturday afternoon as the Mariners fell to New England Football Conference opponent MIT, 30-13.

The Mariners took the opening possession 78 yards down the field on an 11-play drive, capped off by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Corey Creeger (Biddeford, Maine) to Jordan Susi (South Portland, Maine). Cameron Crook (Amherst, N.H.) added an extra point to make it 7-0.

MIT answered right back on the next drive, with an 11-yard rush by John Robertson followed by another Robertson rush, this time for 47 yards and the score. The Engineers added an extra point to even things up at 7-7 with 8:54 remaining in the first quarter.

Maine Maritime opened up the second quarter with a touchdown as Doolan marched 79-yards down the field into the end zone to give the Mariners the 13-7 lead. 

With 6:24 to go in the second half the Engineers capped off a 4-play 66-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Udgam Goyal to Eddy Garcia-Montes. Tucker Cheyne added an extra point to give the Engineers the one-point lead.

Cheyne added a 34-yard field goal, following a 5-play 33-yard drive as time expired to send MIT into the halftime with a 17-13 lead.

The Mariner defense came up big holding the Engineers scoreless in the red zone on their opening possession of the second half, to keep MIT's lead at four points. Cheyne added another field goal, this time from 43 yards with 1:47 left in the third quarter to give the Engineers a 20-13 lead.

MIT scored on back-to-back possessions in the middle of the fourth quarter, on an 11-yard pass from Goyal to Jacob Del Priore with 7:46 remaining and a 27-yard field goal from Cheyne with 2:13 remaining to claim the 30-13 victory.

Creeger finished the afternoon with 60 yards on four completions and 28 rushing yards, while James Ferrar (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in with 43 yards.

Goyal recorded 229 yards in the air with two touchdowns, Garcia-Montes led the MIT offense with 170 receiving yards, including a long catch of 64-yard and Robertson totaled 83 yards on 20 carries.

John Bennett (Chelsea, Maine) chipped in with a career-high 10 tackles and a broken up pass. Kodiak Brush led MIT's defense with eight tackles, seven solo.

The Mariners fall to 1-2 (0-1 NEFC) on the season and will return to action next Saturday, October 1 at Coast Guard Academy. The Engineers improve to 1-3 (1-0 NEFC) on the season and will host Endicott next Saturday.
