O'Neal Records Two Double-Doubles as Mariners Split Pair of Non-Conference Matches

WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 3-2 win over Bates College after falling to Colby College 3-1 earlier in the day.

Colby College 3 – Maine Maritime 1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23)

Maine Maritime won the first set by a 25-23 score, but the Mules bounced back for narrow 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 set wins.

Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with 19 kills and teammate Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) had 17 kills. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded a career-high 50 assists and added two blocks. Clark also had 19 digs and three aces, while O'Neal added 17 digs.

Karolina Serhan tallied 15 kills for Colby, while adding seven digs and four blocks. Paige Hanssen added 10 digs and eight kills, while Elizabeth Noyes, Nicole Petherbridge, and Alexa Busser all had seven kills. Molly Manuel finished with 26 assists, Erin Maidman added 18 digs and two aces, and Noyes had 11 digs and three blocks. Mae Sefransky finished with 14 assists, Emily Moslener had 11 assists, Hanssen added 10 digs, and Busser had three blocks.

Maine Maritime 3 – Bates College 2 (19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12)

Bates held a two-set advantage winning set one 25-19 and set two 25-21, but the Mariners staged a comeback and took sets three, four and five with scores of 25-19, 25-20, 15-12.

Gillian O'Neal led the Mariners with a double-double of 20 kills and 12 digs, while adding five aces. Tess Clark finished just shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs and a block. Melissa Spaulding (Fairbanks, Alaska) tallied 45 assists and four digs and Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Mariners with 13 digs.

Claire Naughton led the Bobcats with 11 kills, Chandler McGrath had 10 kills and Gabi Eustache led the team with 19 digs. Jacqueline Forney had a team-leading 41 assists.

The Mariners (8-3-1) return to action tomorrow when they travel to Maine-Fort Kent for a pair of matches beginning at 10:30 am.
