Mariners Cruise to Victory over Wheelock

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer picked up an 8-0 victory over Wheelock College on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the 2016 Old Town Canoe Classic on Ritchie Field.

Morgan Libby (Bruswick, Maine) opened up the scoring for the Mariners with her first goal of the season in the fourth minute, and Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) added two goals in the sixth minute to give the Mariners an early 3-0 lead.

Freshman Melissa Huot (Biddeford, Maine) picked up her first career goal in the 32nd minute and freshman Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) followed with her first career goal in the 39th minute. Huot and Doiron teamed up for the next goal, giving the Mariners a 7-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Freshman Kelsea Anair (Richmond, Maine) scored the lone goal of the second half, the first of her collegiate career, in the 71st minute to secure the 8-0 victory for the Mariners.

Dominique DelBene recorded 13 stops in net for the Wildcats, while Alice Van Kovn (Lancaster, Calif.) secured a victory in her first collegiate appearance in goal for the Mariners.

Maine Maritime (1-0-1) returns to action on Tuesday night at Bates at 8:00 p.m. for a non-conference matchup.
