Spartans Fend Off Maine Maritime's Second-Half Resurgence

CASTLETON, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Castleton University on Saturday afternoon, 86-76 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 26 points, including eight three-pointers, tying the Maine Maritime Academy single-game record for most three-pointers made in a game. Newcomb also pulled down two rebounds and dished out an assist.

Maine Maritime's Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) hit a three to open up the scoring at 19:08 and Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) connected with Newcomb for a three on three-consecutive offensive possessions to give the Mariners a 12-5 lead, with 16:26 to go in the first half.

The Spartans scored nine-unanswered points to take a 14-12 lead at 12:42. Another three from Newcomb gave the Mariners a 19-18 lead at 9:41, but Castleton outscored Maine Maritime 33-11 to close out the first half and took a 51-30 advantage into halftime.

The Mariners came out fighting in the second half, using a 13-point run, led by five points from Thayer, to cut the deficit to 69-63 with six minutes to play. Newcomb splashed a three with 2:56 to go to make it 74-69, but the Spartans responded with a three of their own to make it an eight-point game. Castleton went on a 5-1 run for the next minute of play to make it a 12-point game, and hung on for the 86-76 win.

Thayer finished the afternoon with 18 points, a game-high seven assists, one rebound, and a steal, and DePatsy added 13 points, a team-high six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Chad Copeland led six Spartans in double-digits with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Tondi Mushandu tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and also contributed five assists. Jordan Nelson recorded 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals, both Ben Mrowka and Edmund Fitzgerald chipped in with 11 points, and Pavin Parrish contributed 10 points.

Maine Maritime falls to 3-14 on the season and 0-10 in the NAC, while Castleton improves to 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday, January 27 when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 5:30 p.m., as part of Basketball Alumni Weekend.
