Eagles Defeat Mariners

BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Husson University 82-53, on Saturday afternoon, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead following a three-pointer from Darla Morales, but a three-point play by Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) tied the game up with 7:37 to go in the first quarter. A three from Chandler Guerrette gave the Eagles a 12-6 lead with 3:30 to play, but the Mariners fought back scoring six-unanswered points, highlighted by four points from Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine), to tie the game at 12-12 at 2:44.

A three from Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) gave the Mariners a 15-14 lead, but Denae Johnson made a jump shot for the Eagles to make it 16-15 in favor of Husson. Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.) sank a jumper to retake the lead for the Mariners, but the Eagles scored a pair from the line in the final minute of the first quarter to take a slight 18-17 advantage into the second quarter.

Husson began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Mariners 25-12 to take a 43-29 lead into halftime.

The Eagles held the Mariners to just 24 points in the final two quarters to hang on for the victory.

Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) led the Mariners with 12 points, five rebounds, and an assist, while Ogden ended the afternoon with 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists, and Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) added 11 points, three rebounds, and an assist.

Kenzie Worcester led the Eagles with 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals, Morales added 15 points, three rebounds, two steals, and an assist and Guerrette contributed 13 points, four assists, three rebounds, and a steal.

The Mariners fall to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday night when they host UMaine-Farmington at 7:30 p.m., for a NAC matchup inside of Smith Gym.
