Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Husson University 83-70, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead following a three-pointer from Raheem Anderson, but the Mariners answered with five-unanswered points, capped off by a Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) three-pointer, to take a 5-3 lead. Anderson sank another jump shot to tie the game at 5-5, and the two teams exchanged three-pointers to keep the game deadlocked at 8-8 with 14:50 to play in the first half. Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) and Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) made jump shots on back-to-back possessions to give the Mariners a 12-8 lead, but an Anderson layup cut the gap to two points with 13:37 remaining.
Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) sank a three to stretch the Mariners' lead to five, but the Eagles scored nine-unanswered points to take a 19-15 lead following a Eli Itkin three with 10:21 to go. The Eagles built a 10-point lead with 6:31 to go, but the Mariners continued to battle, outscoring the Eagles 18-10 in the final six minutes of the half to send the game into halftime tied at 38-38.
The Eagles opened up the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 43-38 lead, but three-straight threes on Maine Maritime possessions closed Husson's lead to 55-54 at 13:31 but the Eagles began to outstretch their lead, leading by as much as 15 in the closing seconds, and hung on for the victory.
Judge led the Mariners with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal, DePatsy ended the afternoon with 13 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, three rebounds, and two assists and Newcomb added 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Meklin led Maine Maritime with seven rebounds, while also adding seven points, two steals and an assist, and Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with five assists, to go with eight points and four rebounds.
Anderson led all players with 30 points, while also tallying five assists, four rebounds, and two steals, Zach Curran contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and an assist, and Mitch Worcester added 10 points, an assist, and a block.
The Mariners fall to 3-9 overall, and 0-5 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, January 10 when they host UMaine-Farmington at 5:30 p.m. for a NAC matchup.
