CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball defeated UMaine-Farmington 69-50 on Tuesday night in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both teams inside of Smith Gymnasium. 

The Mariners improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the NAC, while the Beavers fall to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday when they travel to take on NAC rival Husson University at 1:00 pm. 

The teams battled closely to start the first quarter, but the Mariners took a 19-11 advantage after the first ten minutes and never looked back, cruising to the 69-50 victory.

Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Maine Maritime with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal while teammate Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) contributed 11 points, a game-high five steals, three rebounds, and an assist. Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) added eight points, a team-high six rebounds, two steals and a block and Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led all players with six assists, while also chipping in with seven points, three rebounds and a steal.

McKenna Brodeur led the Beavers with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal while teammate Paige Carter led all players with 12 rebounds, and Morgan Crocker chipped in with nine points, three rebounds and a steal.

The Mariners shot 44.6 percent from the floor while the Beavers shot 25.0 percent, the Mariners also held a 41-35 edge in rebounds.
