Eagles Slip By Mariners

POULTNEY, Vt. -- Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Green Mountain College 58-55 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of the Eagle Dome.

With the loss the Mariners fall to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in the NAC. The Mariners return to action against SUNY Maritime on December 29th at 2 p.m.

Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) each hit a pair of threes to give the Mariners a 12-4 lead at 14:57 in the first half. Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) made a layup to extend the lead to 14-4. The Eagles got within one point (24-23) at 6:46 but the Mariners pulled away once again and took a 30-25 lead into halftime.

Green Mountain closed the gap to just one point again numerous times in the first eight minutes of the second half and finally tied the game up at 39-39 at 12:04. Richardson scored four-straight to give the Mariners a 43-39 lead at 8:49 and Maine Maritime held a slim advantage until the Eagles tied the game up at 48-48 with 6:49 remaining. DePatsy hit another three and Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) made a jumper to give the Mariners a 53-48 lead with 5:50 to play. The Mariners held a 55-50 lead with 2:31 remaining but the Eagles scored eight-unanswered points to take the 58-55 victory.

DePatsy led the Mariners with 14 points and five rebounds, Richardson added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) added 10 points, three assists, three steals and a rebound.

Sean Leflore led Green Mountain with 17 points and six rebounds, teammate Duane Goodman, Jr. added 14 points and four rebounds and Alex Sanchez added a game-high 10 rebounds, while also contributing eight points.

The Eagles shot 39.6 percent from the floor while the Mariners shot 33.3 percent, and Green Mountain held a 41-32 edge in rebounds.
