Men's Basketball Falls to Terriers on Senior Day

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Thomas College, 71-67 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The Terriers took an early lead following back-to-back threes, but a dunk from Sam Meklin (Rockland, Maine) closed the deficit to 6-2. Thomas led by as much as nine points (15-6) at 11:38, but the Mariners used back-to-back threes from Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) to close the gap to 15-13 at 9:09 and continued to chip away.

Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) made a layup to tie the game at 21-21 with 3:57 to go in the half, and Dylan Stevens (Wells, Maine) used a three-point play to give the Mariners their first lead of the game, 24-21, at 3:24. A three from Thomas' Tyheem Simon tied the game up once again, but the Mariners took a narrow 26-25 lead into halftime.

Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) hit a layup to open up the second half and extended Maine Maritime's lead to 28-25, but Zach Mackinnon splashed a three to tie the game at 19:15. The Terriers built a six-point lead twice, before Newcomb hit a pair of threes to tie the game at 38-38 with 13:58 to play. Thomas regained the lead and took a seven-point advantage (48-41) at 11:01, but once again the Mariners fought back to close the gap to one (50-49) following six-straight points from Thayer at 8:52.

The Terriers built as much as a six-point lead entering the final three minutes of play but successful trips to the charity stripe by Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine), Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine), and Thayer closed the gap to just two with 50 seconds to go. Tailour Hall hit a jumper for the Terriers with 23 seconds to play, and Thomas went three-for-four from the line to close out the 71-67 victory.

Newcomb and Thayer led the Mariners with 15 points each, Newcomb added four assists and a rebound, and Thayer added a team-high six assists, as well as two rebounds and two steals. Gilson and Stevens added eight points, four rebounds, and a block each, while Gilson added two assists and a steal and Stevens contributed an assist. Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) chipped in with six points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Simon led Thomas with a game-high 21 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, Mackinnon tallied 16 points, two rebounds, and an assist and Carlos Gonzales added 15 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Ian King tallied a game-high nine rebounds for the Terriers, while dishing out nine assists.

The Mariners conclude their season with a 5-10 record, including a 2-16 record in the conference. The Terriers improve to 13-12 overall and 11-7 in the NAC, and await their postseason fate.
