Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to Thomas College, 78-71 on Wednesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 5-19 on the season and 4-13 in the conference, while the Terriers improve to 14-10 overall and 11-6 in the NAC. Maine Maritime concludes the season on Saturday at UMaine-Farmington at 3:00 pm.
Prior to the game the Mariners recognized their three senior players; Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine), Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) and Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) as well as the team's Student Assistant Coach Caleb Tipton (Boscawen, N.H.).
Thomas College jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the game, but Judge splashed a three and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) added a jumper to tie the game at 5-5 at 17:14. The Mariners built a seven point lead (15-8) after back-to-back threes from Newcomb, but the Terriers fought back to close the gap to one, 19-18, at 9:41 and tied the game up following a free throw from Lovegeurson Fleurine.
The Mariners went on a 16-2 run, highlighted by six points from DePatsy, to build a 35-21 lead with 5:25 to go in the half. Thomas College scored six-unanswered points to close the gap to 35-27 but the Mariners took a 45-34 advantage into halftime.
The Terriers went on a six-point run to open up the second half and closed the Mariners' lead to 45-40. Maine Maritime answered back with a three from DePatsy to retake an eight-point lead, but the Terriers continued to chip away and scored another six-straight to close the deficit to 48-46 with 15:59 to go. Thomas College stayed within striking distance, and used back-to-back three-pointers to take a 58-56 lead at 10:21. Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) hit a layup to tie the game, but the Terriers scored six-straight once again, to take a 64-58 lead at 5:22.
A three from Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) closed the Terrier lead to 68-65 with 2:56 to play. Jorgenson pulled down a rebound on the other end, setting up a three from Newcomb to tie the game, but the Mariners came up short in the final seconds as the Terriers went 5-of-6 from the line in the closing seconds to pick up the victory.
Jorgenson led the Mariners with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Newcomb ended the evening with 15 points, one rebound and an assist. Thayer chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Judge contributed nine points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
John Morgan led Thomas College with 18 points, nine rebounds and a steal, while Matt Allen contributed 12 points, four assists and three rebounds and both Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Butler tallied 10 points.
The Terriers shot 46.0 percent from the floor, while the Mariners shot 40.3 percent and Thomas held a 44-34 edge in rebounds.
