Canton Edges Maine Maritime in OT

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to SUNY Canton 74-69 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Mariners went on a seven-point run to take a 10-point lead with 10:51 remaining in the first half, but the Roos battled back to cut the lead to 32-29 entering halftime.

Canton closed the gap to one (42-41) with 14:52 left in the second half and tied things up at 50-50 at 9:39. The Roos took their first lead of the second half at 7:11, but the Mariners rebuilt a seven-point lead (60-53) at 3:04 and led by six (62-56) with 2:37 to play. Canton chipped away at the deficit and Andrew Fitch put away a basket on Roos' miss, as time expired to send the game into overtime.

The Roos opened up overtime on a five-point run to take a 67-62 advantage. DeMerrill Levy (Houston, Texas) hit four-straight to cut it to 67-66 but the Roos made a pair from the line to keep their lead at three and pulled down a defensive rebound on the other end that led to basket by Quran DuBois to make it 71-66 with 30 seconds to play. Riley MacLeod (Bucksport, Maine) hit a three with 21 seconds left to cut the gap to three, but Canton held on for the win.

Inside the Numbers: Levy led the Mariners with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, while also contributing four assists and two steals and Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) added 21 points, three rebounds, and a block.

DuBois led the Roos with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal, Juztin Chambers-Phillips chipped in with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal while both Fitch and Kahdean Bennett added 10 points and seven rebounds each, Fitch added five blocks and three steals and Bennett contributed a steal.

Maine Maritime shot 40.4 percent from the floor, and 34.5 percent from three-point land, while Canton shot 40.6 percent overall and 30.0 percent from behind the arc. The Roos held a 43-38 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners dip to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the NAC, while the Roos improve top 7-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday, January 17 when they host Husson University for a NAC matchup at 7:30 pm
