Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball cruised to a 71-57 victory over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium on Senior Day.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their seniors: Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine), Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine), Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.), Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) and Caiden Shea (Freeport, Maine).
How it Happened: The Mariners jumped out to an 11-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Beavers battled back to cut it to 16-10 late in the quarter, but the Mariners rebuilt a 21-10 advantage entering the second quarter and led by 20 at half (41-21).
The Beavers fought back in the second half, outscoring the Mariners 36-30, but the early deficit proved to be too large for the Beavers and the Mariners claimed the win.
Inside the Numbers: Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, while also adding three blocks, two assists and a steal. Ogden also added 20 points to go along with four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.
Alex Bessey led the Beavers with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds, four steals, two blocks and an assist, while McKenna Brodeur chipped in with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and a block.
The Mariners shot 41.4 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three-point land, while the Beavers shot 29.2 percent overall and 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Mariners dominated the board, outrebounding Farmington 52-39.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 20-4 on the season and 12-1 in the NAC, while the Beavers drop to 12-12 overall and 9-4 in the conference. Maine Maritime wraps up the regular season on Tuesday night, when they travel to face Husson University at 5:30 pm.
The victory marks the Mariners' fifth 20-win season in program history (24 seasons).
