Owls Fend Off Mariners' Late Run

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to UMaine-Presque Isle, 74-62 on Wednesday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Owls used a seven-point run early in the first half to jump out to a 19-8 lead at 13:23 and maintained a lead for the entirety of the half, carrying a 44-25 lead into halftime.

Maine Maritime put together an eight-point run to close the gap to 49-36 at 15:45 of the second half, but the Owls answered back and built a 20-point lead (62-42) at 11:01. The Mariners continued to fight, and cut UMPI's lead to 67-58 with 4:23 to play, but the Owls hung on for the win.

Inside the Numbers: Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 23 points, including five three-pointers, five rebounds, two assists and a block while Kimani Anderson (Houston, Texas) recorded a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, to go with four assists and two steals.

Shyquinn Dix led the Owls with 18 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals, while KJ Minter added a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal and TeVon Hines contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Griffin Guerrette rounded out the players in double-figures with 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal.

Maine Maritime shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from behind the arc, while the Owls shot 45.3 percent overall and 40.9 percent from three. The Mariners held a 36-31 advantage in rebounds.

Up Next: With the loss the Mariners fall to 4-16 overall and 2-7 in the NAC, while the Owls improve to 9-12 on the season and 4-7 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to take on NVU-Lyndon for a 3:00 pm NAC matchup.
