Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's soccer defeats Husson University in a thrilling 3-2 win on senior day and claim the top spot for the East Division in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.
How it Happened: Natalie Aviolla scored a quick goal for the Eagles in the third minute of play off a free kick. The Mariners answered with a goal from Kirra Magana (Miami, Fla.) off a corner kick by MacKenzie Carter (Ashland, Maine) to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.
Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard, Maine) started off the second half with an unassisted goal in the 50th minute to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead. Mackenzie Lambert answered for the Eagles with a goal in the 80th minute of play, to tie the game 2-2, going into the last ten minutes of play. Carter scored the game-winning goal for the Mariners in the 83rd minute of play off a free kick to claim the 3-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers: The Eagles held a 13-9 advantage in shots over the Mariners, and the two teams both tallied seven corner kicks. Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine) recorded five saves in net for the Mariners, while Hannah Kenney tallied one save for the Eagles.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 8-6 overall and 7-1 in conference, while the Eagles fall to 10-4-2 overall and 8-1 in conference. The Mariners return to action next weekend when they host the NAC Women's Soccer Championship tournament. As the top-seed, the Mariners will face UMaine-Presque Isle. Quarterfinal games will be held on Saturday, October 30 and Semifinal games will be held on Sunday, October 31 in Castine, Maine.
