Mariners Beat Owls

PRESQUE Isle, Maine – Maine Maritime women's volleyball beat UMaine-Presque Isle twice, by a score of 3-0 in each match, in a double-header conference matchup on Sunday afternoon.

Maine Maritime 3 – UMaine-Presque Isle 0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-6)

How it Happened: The Mariners used a kill by Chloe Weeks (Farmington, N.H.) to start an early six-point run to lift over the Owls, 25-10. In the second set, Maine Maritime went on a nine-point run that sparked a 21-12 lead and never looked back, claiming a 25-14 win. The Mariners won the third set, 25-6 in commanding fashion to claim the 3-0 victory over the Owls.

Inside the Numbers: Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) led the Mariners with a game-high 25 assists, seven aces, five digs, and one kill. Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) chipped in a game-high 15 digs, three assists, and one ace, while teammate Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) totaled a game-high 11 kills, seven digs, and two aces.

Makayla Miskiewicz led the Owls with three kills and three digs, while teammate Alexis Engel tallied seven digs, one kill, one assist, and one ace.

Maine Maritime 3 – UMaine-Presque Isle 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-15)

How it Happened: The second match of the day proved to be more competitive. In a back-and-forth first set that led to a 19-19 score, the Mariners used a four-point run sparked by Hunnie Zuber-Stephens (Lubbock, Texas) to take a 23-19 lead. The Owls cut that lead to 23-22 with a run of their own, which was ended by a kill from Briana Mays (Bradenton, Fla.), and the Mariners took the 25-22 win. The second and third set had similar back-and-forth action throughout the match with the Mariners coming out on top in each set to claim another 3-0 win over the Owls.

Inside the Numbers: Albritton led the Mariners once again with a game-high 28 assists, ten digs, and half a block. Rich tallied 13 digs, four assists, and one ace, while Melampy recorded a game-high nine kills, six digs, and two aces.

Engel led the Owls with a game-high 17 digs and one kill, while teammate Miskiewicz recorded seven kills, seven digs, and one ace.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 13-6 overall and 8-0 in conference, while the Owls fall to 4-14 overall and 3-4 in conference. The Mariners return to action on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:00pm when they host Colby College for senior night. The Mariners are recognizing two seniors, Briana Mays (Bradenton, Fla.) and Mika Pitre (Pilot Hill, Calif.).
