Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat UMaine-Fort Kent, 79-41 Friday night in a non-conference matchup.
How it Happened: The first quarter proved to be competitive, with both teams playing lockdown defense and Maine Maritime taking a 9-4 lead going into the second quarter. The Mariners then outscored the Bengals in the second quarter by 19 points, to bring the score to 34-11 at halftime.
Maine Maritime opened up the second half, going on a 13-4 run with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter. The Mariners were able to hold onto their lead for the rest of the game, claiming a 79-41 victory.
Inside the Numbers: Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) came off the bench for the Mariners, scoring a game-high 17 points, along with two assists and two rebounds. Claire Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) also came off the bench with one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, and one assist. Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) and Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) both added 11 points to the mix, while Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds.
Karolyn Baptiste led the Bengals with 15 points, three rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Sheyla Aquilar and Arieyle Baker both added seven points to the mix.
The Mariners shot 45.6% from the hardwood and 31.8% from three point land, while UMaine-Fort Kent shot 19.2% from the floor and 8.8% from beyond the arc.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Bengals fall to 0-3. Maine Maritime returns to action on Sunday, November 28 when they travel to Lewiston to take the Bobcats of Bates College.
