Mariners Win Conference Opener Over Terriers

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's basketball beat Thomas College, 74-68 Saturday afternoon in their first conference matchup.

How it Happened: The Terriers jumped to a quick start, going on a 17-6 run with 13:33 left in the first half, which was their largest lead of the contest. The Mariners climbed their way back into the game late in the first half, when they took the lead after Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) splashed a three point shot to make the score 30-27 with 4:21 left in the first. Thomas College regained the lead, going into the half with a score of 38-36.

The second half was very competitive, with multiple lead changes. Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) hit a layup with eight minutes left in the game to give the Mariners their largest lead of the night, with a score of 56-50. The match was tied 65-65 with three minutes left in regulation, until Cameron Gerlach (Hendersonville, Tenn.) hit a free throw to go up one and the Mariners never looked back. Reincke made a foul shot to to secure the win, claiming a 74-68 victory over Thomas College.

Inside the Numbers: Rubin tallied a double-double with a game-high 21 points and ten rebounds, in addition to two assists and one block. Markus Ramirez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 19 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists to the mix, while Reincke recorded 16 points, three rebounds, and one steal.

Demetris Webster led the Terriers with 15 points, four assists, three rebounds, and one steal. Lokiron Anda, Sawyer Deprey, and Parker Desjarins all added 11 points for the Terriers.

The Mariners shot 48.1% from the floor and 37.5% from three point land, while the Terriers shot 38.5% from the hardwood and 30.4% from beyond the arc.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in conference, while Thomas College falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, December 11 when they host UMaine-Farmington at 1:00pm.
