Beavers Defeat Mariners in Opener

CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball fell to UMaine-Farmington 81-56 on Saturday afternoon inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Beavers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first half. The Mariners closed the gap to 12-10 with 14:32 to go, but the Beavers went on an eight-point run to take a 20-10 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half. The Mariners used an eight-point run of their own to close the gap to 20-18, but the Beavers outscored Maine Maritime 21-7 to close out the first half and took a 41-25 lead into halftime.

The Beavers carried their momentum into the second half and took a 30-point lead with 4:25 remaining in the game, on their way to the 81-56 victory.

Inside the Numbers: Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) led the Mariners with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while also adding a steal. Riley Jorgenson (Vienna, Va.) contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist, Drew Price (Tampa, Fla.) added nine points and three rebounds and Cameron Gerlach (Hendersonville, Tenn.) chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds and three assists in his collegiate debut.

Jack Kane led the Beavers with 23 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal, while both Kyle Donlin and Terion Moss added 16 points. Moss added a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with five steals and four assists, and Nathan Poulin scored 11 points, pulled down three rebounds and dished two assists.

The Mariners shot 33.9 percent from the floor and 25 percent from three-point land, while the Beavers shot 40.8 percent overall and 20.7 percent from three. Farmington held a 46-37 advantage in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners are scheduled to travel to UMaine-Presque Isle, to take on the Owls next Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 pm.
