Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime volleyball picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Friday night in non-conference action.
How it Happened: The two teams battled closely to start the first set, but the Mariners pulled ahead with a 13-8 lead, following an ace from Briana Mays (Bradenton, Fla.), and outscored the Monks 7-1 to close out the set with a 25-21 win.
The Mariners jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but the Monks fought back to close the gap to just two points following back-to-back kills from Isabel Philbrick and Nicole Baron. Maine Maritime capitalized on three Monk miscues and a kill from Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) to build up a six-point advantage and despite a late-set three-point run by St. Joe's the Mariners hung on for the 25-19 set win.
Maine Maritime controlled the third set, using a six-point run to take a 14-8 lead and never looked back on their way to the match win.
Inside the Numbers: Melampy led the Mariners with 12 digs and 11 kills, while also adding an ace, Mays led the Mariners with four aces, while contributing three blocks, two kills and two digs. Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) was impressive in her collegiate debut, leading the Mariners with 17 assists and adding nine digs, two kills, an ace and a block.
Olivia Kent led the Monks with five kills, while teammate Maggie Sylvester tallied a match-high 13 digs and Hanna Holden led the team with 11 assists.
With the victory the Mariners claimed their third-consecutive win over the Monks.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 1-0 on the year, and will remain in Standish to face both Southern Maine and the University of New England tomorrow beginning at 12:00 pm.
